Arcadian Surf Life Saving Club - Nippers

Training for mainland nippers is conducted on the Strand Saturday afternoons from 2.30pm.

The Arcadian Surf Life Saving Club has a Juniors (Nippers) program available to both boys and girls aged 7 to 13 years (Under 8 through to Under 14). We also cater for juniors aged 5 and 6 (under 6 and 7) with a program designed to educate and build a skills base through fun activities. Under 6's and Under 7' are non competive and cannot participate in Carnivals.

There are some pre-requites associated with the junior program including the Under 8's to Under 14's having an ability to swim. To this end children within these age groups must complete a swim competency prior to particpating in official club training, Nipper days or at Carnivals. It is also a pre-requite that at least one parent joins the club. This assists us in recruiting and developing suitable parents to assist in running training days, nipper days and carnivals (eg water safety, age managers, etc). The club acknowledges that not all parents will have the time nor skills base to do this.

A discounted membership fee is available for any parent who joins and then achieves the Bronze Medilon award throughout the course of the season.

Although competition forms a part of Surf Life Saving we at Arcadia are acutely aware that not all juniors join surf life saving for this reason. Our junior program therefore incorporates a variety of practicale elements designed to foster co-operation, team work and build confidence, self awareness and life skills. These include;

  • Instruction in surf safety and surf awareness
  • Lifesaving & first aid skill development
  • Environmental studies
  • Competitive sport activities
  • Overview & introduction to senior beach patrolling duties
  • Social activities for children & parents

Nipper days are conducted at Alma Bay and on The Strand as set out in calendar of events below. Nipper days are the vehicle we use to deliver our program to our juniors. Each age group has an Age Manager who is responsible for the education, training and organisation of thier relevant age group. This training is geared toward the older juniors obtaining their Resuscitation Certificate in the Under 13s, their Surf Rescue Certificate at 13 (Under 14) and their Bronze Medallion at 15.

Our club forms part of the Northern Barrier Branch which stretches between Forrest Beach (Ingham) to the North and Sarina in the South. The competition calender normally incorporates 5 major carnivals throughout the course of any given season including the North Australian Championships which are conducted in Mackay annually and culminating in the Qld Championships which is hosted by Clubs all over the state, held in March or April each year.

Junior beach and water training is conducted on The Strand between 4.30pm and 6pm each Wednesday and at Alma Bay between 3.30pm - 6pm on Tuesdays and Thursday. All training is undertaken under the supervision of qualified coaches. The Arcadian Junior Activities are controlled by the Junior Activities Committee which meets on a monthly basis to discuss issues associated with our juniors. These meetings are open to all members and parents.
